Tip Calculator

There are a couple of options when using our tip calculator. Before you get started, you need to decide if one person will be paying the bill or you will split the bill between multiple people. You can use the standard tip calculator field if just one person is paying. You can skip down to the Shared Bill Tip Calculator section if the bill is shared or split.

Tip Percentage Calculator

  • Step 1: Enter the price of the service in the field and click the Calculate button.
  • Step 2: Review the results. Select your desired tip percentage to find the exact tip amount. The calculator will return a chart that shows what the tip amount should be based on a range of percentages (between 5% and 50%).

Shared Bill Tip Calculator

  • Step 1: Enter the price of the service, desired tip percentage, and the number of people in your party. Click the Calculate button to see the results.
  • Step 2: Review the results. The calculator will provide both the tip and total amount for the group and how much each person owes individually.

Example

Let’s say you and your five friends are out for a nice dinner on a trip to the United States. You agreed ahead of time to split the check evenly. When the bill arrives, the total amount for the meal is $120. In the United States, it’s customary to leave a tip of 15% when dining at a restaurant.

To calculate how much each person owes, you can open the Shared Bill Tip Calculator and enter the following values:

  • Price: $120
  • Tip: 15%
  • Number of People: 6

Once you hit the Calculate button, you’ll see that each person should pay $23 (including a $3 tip).

Understanding the Tipping Formula

The formula for calculating a tip is a fairly simple calculation. To find the tip amount, take the price of the service and multiply it by the tip percentage (in decimal format).

To convert a percentage to a decimal, take the amount and divide by 100. For example, if the tip amount is 15 percent, divide 15 by 100, and you’ll get 0.15. Note: The calculation below includes this conversion.

The formula to calculate a tip is:

$$X = S × \frac{P}{100}$$

  • X = Tip Amount
  • S = Price of the Service
  • P = Tip Percentage

This calculation is helpful if you leave a tip in cash separately or need to add the tip to the transaction receipt.

Alternate Calculation - Shared Bill Tip

Calculating tips can get complicated if you are dining with friends or family and divide the bill equally. To calculate just the tip per person, you need to calculate the total tip and divide by the number of people (N) in your company.

The formula for calculating just the tip when dividing the bill is as follows:

$$Tip\ amount\ per\ person = \frac {S × \frac{P}{100}}{N}$$

  • S = Price of the service
  • P = Tip Percentage
  • N = Number of people

If you want to calculate both the bill and the tip per person, you need to calculate the total bill (including the tip) and divide it by the number of people (N) in your company.

The formula for calculating both the bill and the tip when splitting the bill is as follows:

$$Total\ amount\ per\ person = \frac {S + (S × \frac{P}{100})}{N}$$

  • S = Service price
  • P = Tip Percentage
  • N = Number of people

Key Benefits and Helpful Tips

Knowing when to tip and how much is essential. Service workers work hard to provide their guests and patrons with excellent service and should be compensated appropriately. In addition to calculating the correct tip amount, there are a few key benefits people can get from using our free tip calculator.

Key Benefits:

  • No Memorizing Formulas - With a tipping calculator, you don’t have to worry about trying to remember the correct tip formula or having to do the math on the back of your bill.
  • Tipping Options - The tip calculator provides a few different tipping percentages, so you only have to run the calculation once.
  • Better Future Service - If you visit the same restaurants or use the same services frequently, making a mistake on the tip can cause embarrassment or result in poor service in the future.

Helpful Tips:

  • Round-Up - You don’t always have to search for the right coins to pay the exact tip amount. Most people will round up the nearest dollar, euro, or other local currency.
  • Calculate Headcount Costs - This calculator also works great if you organize catering for a large group, such as a corporate event or seminar. For example, suppose you are hosting an event for 500 people. In that case, you can use the quote from the caterer to calculate how much the cost will be per person, including the tip with the Shared Bill Tip Calculator.

The Value of Calculating the Correct Tip Amount

Tipping is a great way to show appreciation to service workers such as waiters, hotel housekeepers, hair stylists, and taxi drivers. In some cases, these workers receive lower wages than the average worker. They rely on tips from patrons to provide additional income. A tip is an easy way to let them know that you appreciate their hard work and acknowledge excellent service.

Globally, tipping is not a universal practice. In some parts of the world, tipping is expected no matter what, while tipping is optional in other places. Understanding the rules around tipping is essential, especially when traveling to an unfamiliar country.

Here are some general things to keep in mind:

  • Tip Amount - The tip amount may vary depending on the country or region and the local culture or norms. The tip amount may also vary depending on the service provided. For example, you might be expected to leave a 15% tip for a waiter in a restaurant but only leave a few dollars per night for a hotel housekeeper.
  • Tips Included - In some countries, tips aren’t expected because they are already included in the price of the service.
  • Tips Can Be Offensive – In some cultures, tipping can be offensive or strange. This can be confusing for people from a culture that embraces tipping. While tipping is usually a sign of gratitude, you could be sending the wrong message in a culture where tipping isn’t expected.

The last thing you want is to shortchange your waiter or driver who relies on tips to make a living. Knowing how to tip and how much to tip is essential to leave the right amount. This tip percentage calculator makes calculating the correct tipping amount quick and easy based on the cost of the service.
